Chinese temples

Address: There are several of these around Phuket Town.
Open Hours: daily, all hours, admission: free.

In the region of Phuket Old Town, you will find a number of Chinese temples and shrines, both modern and ancient. They have a strong connection with Chinese religious beliefs, and many of Phuket’s Thai Chinese come to these temples to pray and meditate. The believers are Buddhists, but they differ from traditional Theravada Buddhism in that they also believe in Taoist and Chinese gods. The temples are ornate and beautiful, featuring many animal images such as dragons – naturally they are decorated in red and gold according to Chinese custom. The Chinese temples become particularly revered during the annual Vegetarian Festival which takes place every November for a week. Three of the major temples that you may wish to see are the Shrine of the Serene Light, the Put Jaw Chinese Temple, and the Jui Tui Chinese Temple.
