Phuket Fantasea is to be found at the north end of Kamala, which is ten minutes north of Patong. You really can’t miss it with its huge signs celebrating the latest festivals, and about 400 meters of roadway lined with flags and lights. It is Kamala’s biggest tourist attraction by some distance, and one of the most visited places in Phuket. When you get inside the Phuket Fantasea complex, you will soon see why. It has a huge amount of parking, and once you are inside the experience is like that of a theme park. There are numerous shops and stalls to browse around, and while some of the attractions are free, you may wish to bring some extra money to try your hand at the various games and sideshows where you can come away with a fairground-style prize – I managed to win a soft toy relatively easily. The buffet restaurant seats an incredible 5000 people, and the food is universally delicious. There is a good mix of Thai, Eastern and Western foods on offer. But the highlight of Phuket Fantasea is definitely the once-nightly stage show, featuring some stunning displays of skill and artistry from the traditional Thai dancers, and some spectacular feats from the acrobats who work their magic way over the heads of the crowd. If you came to see elephants, you certainly won’t be disappointed – Fantasea has over 30 elephants, which makes it an incredible stage show. One note of caution – you are prohibited from bringing cameras and video equipment into the theatre, including fancy mobile phones. You have to hand them in before the show, where they are kept in a safe locker. After the show, you need to queue to get them back, which is a little time consuming. But don’t let this put you off – Fantasea is an incredible experience, and every visitor to Phuket should spend an evening there.
