Wat Phra Tong is a Buddhist temple in the town of Thalang, featuring an image of Buddha which has a fascinating legend behind it. According to the story, a young boy tied his buffalo to what seemed to be a post, and died of a mysterious illness shortly afterwards. The buffalo suffered the same fate. When villagers investigated the area, they discovered that the post was in fact a Buddha image buried mostly underground. Attempts to dig up the image resulted in swarms of wasps and bees attacking the workers. The solution that the villagers came up with was to cover the Buddha image in gold and construct a temple on top of it. Obviously this worked out well, since no more mysterious deaths and wasp attacks were reported afterwards. It is a particularly religious site for Thai Chinese Buddhists, and the story ensures that many people come to see the Buddha image in Wat Phra Tong for themselves.
