Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach
Formerly a small fishing village, in recent years Kamala has steadily grown to become one of Phuket’s best loved resort destinations. The golden beach stretches for some distance, and while it can get a little busier during peak season, rest assured that you will always be able to find a quiet spot in the sun for yourself here. The beach slopes very gently, making it perfect for swimming, and there are special areas marked with buoys for swimmers only, so you can’t be disturbed by jet-skis and boats. In peak season, many shops, bars and massage marquees are set up along part of the beach, so every amenity you need is available to you should you wish.

As Kamala has grown larger, various hotels have been built to accommodate holidaymakers; including some 5 star resorts for those of you want to stay in the lap of luxury. The town itself has its own unique nightlife, with over 60 bars, including popular local favorites such as the Kamala Beer Garden, Black Cats, and of course the Bob Marley bar on the beach itself , which has a very chilled, family friendly vibe with a reggae soundtrack to match. For those who want more excitement, Kamala is only 10 minutes north of Patong, which boasts the famous Bangla road and its all-night party vibe.

There are many local shops and stalls in Kamala, who will be eager to get your custom – unless you really want to buy a suit, it is unwise to be lured into one of the many luxury clothes shops on the beach road. Should you wish to buy from these shops, it is best to go from place to place getting quotes – you will find that the prices drop dramatically once you have been to a few different places. A more relaxing and cheaper place to shop is at the Kamala night-markets, which take place three times a week. Prices are much lower here, but there is still plenty of room for negotiation – if the stallholder gets out an oversized calculator, they are basically inviting you to bargain with them. Give it a try – it’s fun! Remember you can always walk away, but the prices are so low to begin with that you may not be able to resist making a few purchases.

One of Kamala’s highlights is the world-famous Phuket Fantasea, which features over 30 elephants in its unique stage show that provides a great showcase of Thai dance and culture. It also has an excellent buffet restaurant, and there is plenty to do here for adults and children alike. Kamala has a large community of middle-aged and older people who have settled here from abroad, and it’s easy to see why. Kamala is not too quiet, but it’s not too loud either. Kamala is suitable for families, couples, singles and groups of friends alike. If you want a beautiful beach, an occasional drink and a lively atmosphere, with easy access to Patong, then Kamala may be just the place for you.
