Kata Beach
Just a few minutes South of Karon Beach lie the beautiful white sands of Kata Beach. For those who want to get away from it all, Kata Beach offers an idyllic retreat – it is a long stretch of sand with beautiful views in every direction. Paddle in the clear, calm waters or relax in a sun-lounger working on your tan – the choice is yours. If anything Kata is even more family-friendly than nearby Karon, and you are guaranteed a quiet spot to yourself in the sun if you choose Kata as your Phuket destination.
Kata is a small, quiet town, although it still boasts an excellent range of bars and restaurants, and some nightclubs at the north-east part of the beach. The bright lights of Patong are only 15 minutes to the North, so you are never too far away from the action. Kata is an ideal base from which to explore the whole of the South of Phuket. Kata Viewpoint is famous for its great view over Kata, Karon and Kata Noi beaches. Travel 10 minutes to the south and you will arrive at Promthep Cape. The sunsets to be seen from here are simply glorious, and literally hundreds of Thais gather here every day to witness the spectacle. It is not much further to get to the fishing town of Rawai.
Heading East from Kata you can visit Chalong bay, and the historic temples of Wat Chalong. Also to your East is the unmistakable figure of Big Buddha – standing on top of the Nakkerd hills, the 50 metre high white marble image of Buddha can be seen for several miles in every direction. Big Buddha is a must-see, but be sure to wear appropriate attire when visiting, as it is considered a very religious site. Phuket Town is also to the East of Kata, and is an essential trip for anyone who wants to surround themselves in Thai culture. It’s also a great place to shop, with perhaps the best bargains on the island to be found there.
The people of Kata are very friendly and welcoming towards visitors, and there are numerous shops and stalls where you can find a bargain for yourself. Tourists are outnumbered by the locals here even at peak season, so Kata retains a uniquely Thai flavor that cannot be found at every Phuket resort. You are sure to be able to relax and enjoy yourself in Kata. Regardless of the great location and the family-friendly nature of Kata, the real thing that you are coming here for are the dazzling white sands and the sparkling, transparent seas. For beach lovers with a family in tow, Kata might just be the perfect holiday destination for you. Paradise.
